Modalverben

Rules

• Modal verbs are normally with another verb. They ‘help’ the other (main) verb.
• The main verb is in infinitive form and at the end of the clause/sentence.
• * Wissen is not a modal verb, but it has the same conjugation pattern as modal verbs.

Common Patterns

• Ich muss dort Deutsch sprechen. (subject – modal verb – everything else – infinitive verb)
• Darf ich das probieren? (modal verb – subject – everything else – infinitive verb)
• Heute muss ich etwas lernen. (time phrase – modal verb – subject – everything else – infinitive verb)
