Have you got a numeric keypad on your keyboard?

Make sure you have the numeric keypad active; that is, it types numbers rather than navigation arrows. If you aren’t sure, look for a NumLock key and press it to toggle the function of the numeric keypad.

Hold down the Alt key while typing the required code on the numeric keypad.

No numeric keypad or don’t want to remember codes?

  1. Press the Windows key.
  2. Start typing char until you can select the Character Map application.
  3. Select and paste the character that you need.

Frequent user?

Install the German keyboard! You will need to memorise the location of each key, or add stickers to your keys. You can purchase sets of keyboard stickers if you don’t want to make your own.

  1. Open the Windows Settings screen.
  2. Select Time and Language.
  3. Select Language and Region.
  4. Click Add a language.
  5. Search for German and follow the prompts to complete the configuration.

Mac OS, easy!

Older method: Hold down the Option key and press u. Release, then press the letter for which you want an umlaut.

Newer method: Long-press the letter for which you want an umlaut. A menu displays above the cursor with possible characters, each with a number. Press the number corresponding to the character.

Alternative method: Use the Character Viewer application, which you can open from most text boxes in most programs via the Edit Emoji & Symbols menu.

Apple iOS

You can also add a German keyboard layout:

  1. Open the Settings app.
  2. Go to General > Keyboard > Keyboards.
  3. Select Add New Keyboard.
  4. Search for German and follow the prompts to complete the configuration.
